What Is Motivation
Motivation is "a reason or reasons to act in a certain way".
You may think that you need to be motivated to start or that you need to be constantly motivated to be successful in your fitness journey. There's a misconception that motivation is this holy grail of emotion/feeling and without it there's no point in even trying.
How many times have you said to yourself "I just don't have the motivation to stick to a workout plan or i just haven't had the motivation to workout this week"
What people don't realise is that motivation isn't a pre-cursor to action, it's a byproduct. Before you become motivated, you have decide to take action. The motivation to continue is then born.
Take hiring a coach.
You're not hiring a coach because you are motivated, you are hiring a coach because you lack motivation and you are hoping the coach can help you to be more motivated. So the action (hiring a coach) is the pre-cursor. The motivation comes in when the plan is drawn up and your are taking action to reach your goals.
Should You Rely On Motivation
No.
Motivation is fleeting.
It's there in abundance when everything is moving along nicely and your making progess, but when that progress slows or stalls, its quick to disappear.
So what should you rely on?
Instead of focusing on how motivated you are, focus on building sustainable habits. Focus on small consistent tasks you can do daily that are beneficial for your goals.
Can you prepare food for the next day to make it easier and more convenient to stick to your diet?
Can you put a bottle of water by your bed so you can make sure you rehydrate when you wake up and increase your water intake for the day?
Can you build a morning routine that helps to set you up for the day?
Sustainable habits and self discipline are the cornerstone of success. They are the magic pill everyone is always looking for. The problem is that they take time to implement and refine.
In our current society we can order pretty much anything you can imagine and have it delivered in the next day or so. We then set the same expectations when it comes to achieving our goals, even though logically it's unrealistic.
We then end up frustrated and disappointed that we haven't achieved what we wanted to and search for the next quick fix.
Instead of wasting months juming from one fad to the next, spend time learning about yourself. How you work, how you think, the values that drive you and the triggers thay hold you back.
Become the master of yourself.
Once you have figured out how you like to work, you can create habits to support this way of working. Motivation will then become essentially irrelevant.
Remember, you are an individual and what works for others won't necessarily work for you.
